7 steps/phere/vows in Hindu Marriage | Meaning and Definition explained

Well, Hindu marriage’s are full of colours and traditions, the respect towards each rasam/tradition is what makes them so special.

Can you guess, how many rasam’s are there in a  Hindu marriage?

You’ll be shocked to know that a single Hindu marriage has more than hundreds of rasam and hundred’s of unique rasam.

The seven steps/phere’s are just one of them. Emotions, the inner truth and the faith towards the promises is the forte of this rasam.

You can jump right next to the vows section if you already know the feeling behind these vows:

These are not just seven pheras but 7 promises made by both the groom and the bride to each other.

Each phera is a promise with a deep meaning, which would help the couple to live a happily married life.

Generally, these promises are read out by the couple in Hindi language but there is no language for love and heard, the only thing which matter is how much faith you have which reading out each vachan.

This rasam does not complete with just reading out the promises after that couple has to walk 7 rounds around the fire and thereby pledge themselves to each other.

Why do a couple has to walk around the fire?

In India and the Hindu religion, fire is considered as god and reading out promises while walking around the holy fire is a sign of purity.

It is a complete process and takes place under the guidance of “Pandit”, tiny steps complete up this whole process.

Significance of these 7 vows?

The marriage vows cover a big slice in any wedding because these are not just words, these are promises, expression of their future intentions towards each other.

The vows cover do’s and don’ts the couple will be following for a healthy and happily married life.

They promise to put each other’s happiness first and bear the responsibility of having a happy family together.

Both the groom and the bride promise to cede him/her to each other in any situation.

I’m not married yet but I had a keen interest in knowing why these 7 vows are so so valuable.

In India, we always find people talking about the culture and traditions but unless you experience it or try to understand it yourself, you’ll never know how deep and meaningful a culture or a tradition is.

While researching and writing about these 7 vows, I’ve gone through the immense deepness each word is carrying.

You’ll find different explanations for these vows at different sources but the end you’ll find, the real meaning, the value behind these vows is the same everywhere.

  4. Fourth vow: Promise to respect both the families.
